GOALS FOR WEEK 1
By the end of this week, you will:
  1. Understand the goals and requirements of this course.
  2. Get to know your classmates and your teacher and how to email them appropriately.
  3. Understand what textbooks, materials, and online systems you need to obtain for this class.
  4. Take a variety of diagnostic tests to make sure you are in the right level.
  5. Understand yourself better as a student.
  6. Learn about the 3 types of sentences and 3 types of sentence structure problems.
  7. Begin work on a cause-effect essay.
  8. Learn academic vocabulary from our novel and textbooks.
MONDAY
First day of classes:
-Review syllabus
-Welcome presentation
-Review website

-Discuss study plan for Animal Farm
-Human Treasure Hunt
-In-class summary-response writing diagnostic

HOMEWORK
-Buy textbooks at bookstore
and set up online systems
-Review syllabus to see if you have any questions
-Start to read Animal Farm pp 1-36 and work on Homework 1, due Tuesday



TUESDAY
-Name game
-Diagnostic grammar  and sentence structure tests
-Sentence structure review (handout)

HOMEWORK
-BRING LAPTOPS tomorrow!
-Buy textbooks at bookstore
and set up online systems
-Start to read Animal Farm pp 1-36 and work on Homework 1, due Tuesday
-Get a notebook for your class journal, pick an article to read and respond to, and start to write this week's entry (at least 25 sentences)


WEDNESDAY
-Warm-up: Read-around
-Discuss sample diagnostic essay
-Diagnostic reading test
-Review causatives
-Take Myers-Briggs exam and discuss results

HOMEWORK
-Send me an email at [email protected] with your Myers-Briggs personality type and tell me if the description fit your personality or not. Also describe how this information could affect you as a student.
-Buy textbooks at bookstore and set up online systems
-Journals due Friday.

-Start to read Animal Farm pp 1-36 and work on Homework 1, due Tuesday



THURSDAY
-Warm-up: Summary review
​-Sentence structure review
​-Transition word review: GD p. 211-212 and handout

​-LAR Chapter 1: Reading 1
-Introduce cause-effect essays
(handout) and assignment

HOMEWORK
-Pick a topic for your cause-effect essay and bring your laptop to class tomorrow
-Start to read Animal Farm pp 1-36 and work on Homework 1, due Tuesday
-Journals due Friday.
